Latest developments on Friday:
- North Korea reports first Covid death
- US surpasses 'staggering' 1 million Covid-19 deaths
- WHO estimates nearly 15 million deaths associated with Covid-19
At least one Covid-19 patient in North Korea has died as a “fever” spread “explosively” with hundreds of thousands showing symptoms, state media said on Friday. The country imposed a nationwide lockdown on Thursday. It had previously reported no confirmed cases since the pandemic began. It could lead to thousands of deaths in one of only two countries in the world without a Covid vaccination campaign.
The US on Thursday marked a once unimaginable milestone: one million deaths from Covid-19. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden paid tribute to those who had died since the US recorded its first death from the coronavirus in early 2020, saying each life represented an “irreplaceable loss".
