Ecuador lost 2-1 to Argentina in the quarter-final of the World Cup on Saturday.
Goals from Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria ensured the Argentinians progress to the semi-final, where they will face either England or Germany.
The scoring was opened by Messi, his fifth goal in the tournament, with a simple tap in following a sublime cross by Di Maria.
Di Maria then went on to score himself.
Ecuador got a late consolation courtesy of Castillo.
For a side which wrapped up qualification with a game to spare, Ecuador’s road to Qatar World Cup 2022 has been fraught with complications.
Manager Jordi Cruyff left his post before taking charge of a match, leaving Gustavo Alfaro to assume control on the eve of the qualifiers.
But Alfaro's men have exceeded expectations, qualifying from a group that included the Netherlands, hosts Qatar and African Cup of Nations winners Senegal.
They then beat Sweden in the last 16, but were finally defeated by Messi's men in the Education City Stadium.
