An Emirati boy was left in a critical condition after the electric scooter he was driving was struck by a car in Khor Fakkan on Saturday.

Colonel Ali Alkai Al Hamoudi said the accident happened after an Emirati motorist could not avoid hitting the teen on a main road in Al Zabara area in the city.

“We received the report on Saturday night and dispatched patrols and the national ambulance to the location,” he said.

The 13-year-old was taken to the city’s hospital for treatment from severe injuries.

Sharjah police warned against the reckless use of e-scooters and other types of bikes.

It said nearly 2000 different types of bikes including e-scooters have been seized since January as part of a drive to maintain safety on the emirate’s roads.

“A campaign that was launched by Sharjah police and municipality department has led to the confiscation of nearly 181 e-scooters from different parts of Sharjah,” said Lt Col Mohammed Allai Al Naqbi, Director of Sharjah police’s Traffic Department.

Failing to adhere to safety rules topped the violations committed by users of e-scooters, he said.

“Violations were mainly driving in undesignated areas and roads and failing to wear protective gear.”

He urged road users to follow rules that guarantee their safety and that of others.

UAE hospitals reported seeing an increase in injuries caused by electric scooter accidents last March.

Doctors said injuries included fractures, bruises, sprains, scrapes and head injuries.

“They are mostly the results of the rider falling but there have been several cases involving collisions with vehicles,”said Dr Taimoor Tung, from the Medcare Orthopaedics and Spine Hospital in Dubai.

Campaigns to clamp down on the reckless use of bikes in Sharjah are carried out regularly with help from the emirate’s municipality and waste management company Bee’ah.
